...I suppose there is not much of a market for a $600.00 Japanese preamp that doesn’t have flashing LED’s, tone controls, hologram circuits, or other marketable features. What is worse, this preamp has been on the market for several years, and must therefore be counted as outdated...right? ...WRONG! This preamplifier is the BEST BUY in preamplifiers that I have ever heard. Sony knew what it was doing when it designed this preamp. And the price of the TA-86B is deceptive. The inboard headamp is a killer. It is superior to the very nice PS Audio headamp.​

To top it all off, the Sony is a beautifully - constructed, full-functioned preamp. Take the cover off and feast your eyes on the design – it makes the competition look positively chintzy by comparison. The layout is tidy, and there are design features such as a beautiful pair of pots set right between the two channels, driven from the front panel by means of an articulated rod. The switches are also driven remotely, so there is a bare minimum of wire in the unit. Each channel has its own power supply regulation – for preamp and headamp. Resistors are metal – film, and many caps are expensive film types. All RCA plugs are gold plated, the exterior is beautifully finished, and the unit is rack mountable.​

The TA-E86B excels in four areas of performance, each listed below in what was considered to be decreasing order of sonic importance: CHANNEL SEPARATION: The ability to extract “extra” information and place that information in a three dimensional space was felt to be the MOST OBVIOUS strength of design. The unit is of dual monaural construction throughout, the only example of this construction technique we know of at under $1500.00. This construction technique is very expensive and we doubt we will ever see it again offered at anywhere near the TA-E86B’s price. UPPER MIDRANGE/TREBLE SWEETNESS: A lack of glare, coarseness and grain can be found in quite a few modern designs, but few convey the sweet, pleasant, long-listening quality we heard. FREQUENCY EXTENSION: Bass performance is as strong and tight as any unit we have ever tested. Treble performance seems to go out behind what most listeners are accustomed to, but there are no tears.​
